Q: How is data 'overage' handled? Are there additional charges?
A: There is no additional charge for 'overage'. Our philosophy is that you are provided a limited amount of high-speed bandwidth (varies based on monthly plan/configuration), and unlimited 'low-speed' bandwidth. This means your hosted service(s) will always be available, and you can expect a fixed cost with no additional fees.
Q: What is the difference between a 'Virtual Server', a 'Virtual Machine', and a 'VM'?
A: Nothing, at Steele Cloud they actually refer to the same thing: a server running in a Cloud-based environment. We use all terms, as clearly as possible, to better communicate with our customers given their varied backgrounds.
Q: Are new services pro-rated?
A: Yes, all services are billed on a monthly basis, and sign-up/enrollment within a billing period will only require a fractional amount of the full charge (based on date within the current month).
Q: Is the DaaS/Virtual Machine environment shared, like a computer lab system?
A: No, the desktop is supported by a completely independent server OS installation and drive space. The server is yours, and you can add your own users if you wish.
Q: Is it possible to transfer my data from a different, Windows-based host to a Steele Cloud-hosted VM?
A: Absolutely. There are several ways to do this, so please contact us to discuss before proceeding.
Q: Can I upgrade or downgrade my service?
A: Yes, it's possible to upgrade or downgrade your service to a different configuration. Downgrading a storage configuration may require additional steps, and possibly the removal/re-installation of software.
Q: Can I virtually connect USB devices and drives from my local system to my remote system?
A: Absolutely! We have installed software which allows your remote desktop system to access USB devices and drives connected to your local/client system. This feature is included with all our VMs.
Q: I accidentally deleted some critical data. What can I do?
A: Contact us immediately. We will work with you to restore your system from a back-up which contains the data you need.
Q: What is the least expensive way to test/try your service?
A: We suggest ordering a month-to-month account, with reasonable time for testing (e.g. within the last seven days of the current month). This allows for a single and pro-rated charge (i.e. fraction of the regular monthly cost), gives approximately two days for setup, and three to five days for testing. There is no contract for this service, and we do not charge a setup or cancellation fee. If you're not satisfied with the service, simply cancel the account by the end of the billing period.
Q: Can I host a website from a Virtual Server?
A: Absolutely! You should contact our support team so network security settings can be properly enabled for your server and website(s) (note: it is feasible to host multiple websites from a single virtual server).
Q: What are the academic/education rates for the existing services?
A: The academic discount rates are as follows: Value: ($48/month service charge), Scientific: ($68/month service charge), Premium: ($88/month service charge)
